Hematology scientific meetings in Cuba were initiated in 1973 with the First Latin-American Meeting on Cooperative Works in Hematology, thanks to the solidarity of the Mexican and Venezuelan colleagues members of the International Society of Hematology, the Drs. Luis Sánchez Medal and Tulio Arends, respectively, who toghether with Prof. Dr. Ernesto de la Torre, at that time President of the Cuban Society of Hematology and Director of the Institute of Hematology and Immunology, who decided to promove the presence of representatives from different countries of Latin-America and Spain in Havana, when Cuba was being isolated by political reasons.
